The only way for all the players to improve is by speeding up your pace of play. I don’t think that any of us has ever shot their best round when stuck be a foursome playing at a snail’s pace. Remembering these few basic tips will make your round more enjoyable, which always leads to a better frame of mind and a better score.
Don’t take as much time as the pros. Those men and women are a lot better than you and you can take 50 practice swings and it won’t make much of a difference. Limit yourself to a maximum of one practice swing on a full swing, two on a chip shot and two on a putt.
Be ready to hit when it’s your turn. That means that when you are standing next to your ball with the club, all you need to do is swing the club. You don’t know how many times I’ve seen a player hitting a ball in the fairway and his partner is still sitting in the cart.
Once the player hits, the partner must now get out of the cart, choose the club, walk to the ball before he swings. What a waste of time, always be ready. If playing out of a cart, and they are restricted to the paths, bring a couple of clubs. Make sure you are prepared.
Play ready golf. I don’t care if you are closer to the hole than your partner. If you are ready to hit and it’s safe, don’t wait on your partner who isn’t. Hit the ball and get on with it. Don’t get too wrapped up on who is away.
When putting if you are not distracting any of your partners, read your putt and what you are going to do all in your head, so when it is your turn, you simply have to putt the ball.
The ongoing fact of the best way to combat slow play is to be prepared to hit the ball when it’s your turn. Not that when it’s your turn, you now start the process. The process of choosing the right club, or reading the putt, or formalizing the idea of the shot in your head, should be done while your partner is hitting.
Remember when all else fails take a lesson. You’ll be surprised how much we can help.
