GILROY – It was over almost as soon as it started Friday night, as the Gilroy High girls’ basketball team pummeled the visiting Alvarez Eagles 75-19.
Every active player on the Mustangs’ roster recorded a bucket, with Lauren Rhodes scoring a team-high 13 points to lead the way to victory.
“I think the girls executed really well, showed a lot of team passing,” GHS coach Susan Shapiro said. “That will help us for this next week.”
Ahead 20-2 after the first quarter and 44-7 at halftime, Gilroy tried to slow the game down in the second half, taking a 63-11 advantage into the final period.
Gilroy’s Chelsea Hill had 12 points, Jennifer Rose popped in 11, Lindsey Foster pitched in 10, Michelle Sosa scored nine, Demornay Granados had eight, Ashley Lambert scored six, and Sovi Nou, Kristy Pineda and Ashlee Williams all had two.
There were some concerns on the Mustangs’ bench that the easy win would leave the club (15-8 overall, 7-2 Tri-County Athletic League) less prepared for two tough games this week against San Benito (17-4, 7-1) and North Salinas (18-3, 8-1). North Salinas took over the top spot in the TCAL by downing San Benito 38-29 Friday night. Back-to-back victories would put the Mustangs in the driver seat to win league, with a regular season finale taking place Feb. 20 at Notre Dame.
Shapiro believes that even though the latest win was a walk in the park, the level of her team’s play was consistent from start to finish and can be carried over to this week’s games.
“North Salinas is beatable for us, we just need to go out and do it,” she said, adding that her team’s 7-2 league record is “awesome, especially since all these girls are so young.”
Only three players on the GHS roster – Pineda, Rose and Alana Osaki, who has been out with an injury – will be graduating this summer.
Tip-off for Wednesday’s game in Hollister is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Mustangs will return home Friday for a doubleheader of sorts against North Salinas. The freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams for both the GHS boys and girls will all be playing at home. The varsity girls’ game will start at 6:30 p.m., while the boys’ contest is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
Correction: It was incorrectly reported in an earlier version of this article that Gilroy has only two seniors on the team.
