Art supporters can breath a sigh of relief this summer: The Interim Center for the Arts is on its way to get the repairs it desperately needs.
On June 18, City Council voted 6-0 to offer a $5,000 structural analysis of the building, located at 7341 Monterey St., which currently can’t accommodate more than 49 people because of state fire codes.
Several upgrades are required to increase the occupancy limit such as ADA access, bathrooms, fire safety and structural retrofitting.
After it was established during a special Council roundtable last month that the interim building will be used for many years, Council decided to help the building begin the process of becoming structurally sound.
The City hired the structural engineering firm Biggs Cardosa, with whom they have an existing contract, to provide the analysis.
The analysis is slated to begin right away. Once the analysis is finished, the city can begin to talk about how to fund the necessary improvements.
