The Gavilan College Board of Trustees Tuesday appointed Dr. Victor Krimsley to serve as interim president of the school for a month while President Steve Kinsella is out on medical leave.
Kinsella will be out of commission for about a month for back surgery, starting later this month, according to Gavilan College spokeswoman Jan Bernstein-Chargin.
“He’s hoping to be back by the end of April,” Bernstein-Chargin said.
The board Tuesday voted unanimously to appoint Krimsley to serve as temporary president from March 25 to April 24, Bernstein-Chargin.
Krimsley once served as Gavilan’s interim president about four years ago, also when Kinsella was out on medical leave, Bernstein-Chargin said.
The college will pay Krimsley $20,000 for the one-month period while Kinsella is out, according to a Gavilan College staff report.
That one-month salary was arrived at based on Krimsley’s pay the last time he filled in as Gavilan’s interim president, Bernstein-Chargin said. That figure was based on a $200,000 annual salary, including fees paid to a staffing firm, as well as additional expenses and benefits.
This time, Gavilan staff did not go through a staffing firm to hire Kinsella’s temporary replacement, eliminating about a 20 percent search fee that such a firm might charge the school, the staff report says. Also, the proposed compensation for Krimsley does not include standard health and benefits provided to other administrative personnel at Gavilan College.
“It’s expected he’ll be putting in some hours before the month starts, and (attending) some meetings afterwards,” Bernstein-Chargin said.
