John Garcia

Coach Big John Garcia passed away Oct. 14, 2011, surrounded by his family at the age of 64. Beloved husband of Clara Garcia for 36 years. Loving father of Heidi (Rudy) Trujillo and Greg Garcia. Cherished Grampa of Brittney, Morgan, Johnny Trujillo and Avery Garcia. Dearest brother of Phil (Rosemarie) Garcia, Richard Garcia, Tony Garcia, Joe (Frances) Garcia and Connie (Manuel) Limones, Son-In-Law of Angela Gulli, Brother In-Law of Arlene (Doug) Jeske and George (Vonnie) Gulli. Dear Uncle of many nieces and nephews.

In 1965, a graduate of Gilroy High School then attended Gavilan College, UC Riverside and Long Beach State. After completing his education, he began a 33-year career with the City of Gilroy Recreation Department, retiring in 2010. Also spent nearly 40 years coaching football at the college, junior college, semi-pro (Barnstormers) and high school levels.

As part of his duties as a recreation supervisor, was a member of SANCRA for 30 years, including one term as president, representing Santa Clara County at the National Convention. A founding member of Gilroy Sportsman’s Chef. A past-president and executive director of the Gilroy Gang Task Force. A lifetime member of Gilroy Luncheon Optimist, including several years as president.

Preceded in death by his parents Gregorio (Carmen) and Maria Garcia, sisters Petra Galtman, Oralia Azcona, Martha Martinez, Jane Lopez, Annie Samano, Dolores Castro, brother Trini Garcia and Baby John Garcia. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Gilroy Community Youth Center program with the City of Gilroy.

Memorial service will be held Saturday, October 22, 2011, at 11:00 A.M. at the residence of Bob and Linda Garcia, 100 Cohansey Ave. Gilroy. Private burial services were held at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park.
