The GHS JV Basketball team defended its Bob Hagen Memorial Tournament championship, beating Sobrato High School 44-41 in a close, hard-fought final game on Saturday.

This championship marks the second in a row and sixth Hagen championship in the last eight years for the GHS junior varsity program, headed by Jay Baksa.

In the finals, which came down to a dramatic 3-point attempt by Sobrato that just missed, the Mustangs played excellent defense and made key free throws at the end of the game. The JV’s were led by Brendan Holler’s 12 points and Greg Spellman, who was named the tournament Most Valuable Player, with nine points.

The Mustangs opened tournament play with a 67-38 win over Live Oak High School. Luke Otteson’s posted 13 points and nine rebounds and Spellman and Holler had 12 points each.

In the semifinals, Gilroy beat Christopher High School 62-37 behind Spellman’s 19 points and Ron Reed’s 13 rebounds.

Troy Charvet was named to the All-Tournament team.

The JV Mustangs are 6-3 overall, and will resume play at the Watsonville Holiday Tournament on Dec. 27.
