Gilroy’s junior varsity baseball team and rival San Benito engaged in a low-scoring game Wednesday in Hollister. The Haybalers scored two seventh-inning runs to win 2-1.

The freshman baseball game against Monterey High School on Monday was postoned to a later date because of weather problems.

The Mustangs softball squad started off the week strong on Tuesday with a 13-2 win over Alvarez in first league game of the season. Sophomore Sarah Cornaggia was the winning pitcher. Kristy Pineda had a grand slam to pace the Mustangs.

On Wednesday they headed to Archbishop Mitty where they lost to the Monarchs, 7-2. Gilroy scored one of its runs as Ashley Gamboa’s walk was followed by Emily Castro’s double.

The freshmen softball team played a tough game against the Monarchs also on Wednesday, losing 10-9 to make its record 1-6 in preseason.

Gilroy’s JV boys volleyball team faced Monterey on Tuesday at home. The Mustangs started off the match strong, winning the first game 25-20. However, the Toreadors won the second game 25-18 and the third 15-5. This loss was the first in the Tri-County Athletic League for Gilroy. The Mustangs bounced back Thursday to sweep Seaside 25-20, 25-17 and boost their league mark to 3-1.

The JV swimmers competed in Carmel on Tuesday afternoon. Each swimmer participated in three events, and although none of the swimmers took first in the events, many took second. Kathryn Howard took second in the 50 breaststroke, Christina Carillo took second in the 100 freestyle, Scott Branvold was second in the 50 backstroke, and Brandon Kressler was second in the 100 individual medley.

During the Mustangs track meet at home Thursday against Notre Dame and Palma, the JV girls took a 69-66 win over the Spirits while the frosh-soph boys were falling 120-11 to the Chieftains. However, many talented freshmen and sophomores are already competing on the varsity, which leaves the frosh-soph boys in particular low on numbers.
