FREE ART CLASSES In 1989, much of the arts had been removed from the elementary school classrooms, and after visiting the very successful “Hands on the Arts” event in Sunnyvale, Gilroy Recreation staff held a “roundtable” meeting with the hope of creating a similar event. It worked and has bloomed over the years.
Kids Discover Arts, a free, hands-on-the-arts event for children ages 5-11 years old, attracted 400 people last year, too many for the indoor space it used. This year, it will be outdoors Saturday, between City Hall and the Library.
Children can experience mediums of the visual arts through 18 different art workshops, set in a festival-type atmosphere and led by local volunteer artists. This photo was from last year’s event.
