The following organizations and individuals deserve either CHEERS or JEERS this week:

CHEERS: For Goldsmith Seeds and the Gilroy Rotary Club for that perennial favorite (pardon the pun), the Flower Sale at Goldsmith Seeds. The seed company donates the plants and Gilroy Rotary the labor, and happily, $39,000 was collected for Rotary scholarships to deserving students.

JEERS: To the as many as 10 men believed to have been involved in illegal cockfighting in an unincorporated area west of Morgan Hill. Santa Clara County Sheriff deputies found eight to 10 roosters, several bloody and dead, and one injured. The practice is cruel, as roosters are placed in a makeshift arena, beak to beak, then attack each other using claws and spurs attached to bird’s legs. Often, the fight continues until death.

CHEERS: For the end (at least through Thursday) of the rain. After six weeks of almost constant rain, it was nice to see the sun this week, and reminds us that summer is just around the corner.

JEERS: To Olin Corp. for trying to shirk responsibility of perchlorate contamination in South County. Olin contends that the discovery of perchlorate in mushroom farm wastewater means the company is not solely responsible for contaminating South County groundwater. The discovery could ease pressure on the company to clean the groundwater basin. Thankfully, scientists directing perchlorate cleanup efforts are not yet ready to join the company in linking the disinfectant to the 9.5-mile perchlorate plume that stretches south through San Martin and east of Gilroy.

CHEERS: For the Santa Clara County Fair’s likely move to South County. A $38 million settlement between the city of San Jose and Santa Clara County ends a two-year legal battle and clears the way for the fair to move south. County Supervisor Don Gage said he is working with two South County landowners to secure a permanent site.

CHEERS: To Francis Saldate, who despite her disabilities, spends every Wednesday at her grandson’s classroom at Eliot Elementary School where she usually spends time working with small groups of second-graders who need extra help in reading, writing or math.

JEERS: To the oil companies for raising prices faster and higher than ever before. It was not uncommon this week to see prices rise 10 cents a day at area gas stations, and from what we hear, the worst is yet to come.
