More than 100 ladies took to the links at San Jose Country Club Monday and Tuesday to take part in the 61st Annual Santa Clara County Women’s Golf Championship.

There were smiles, there were laughs and there were also ladies who let loose after a poor shot by exclaiming, “Shoot!”

But in the end, whether a player’s round was filled with birdies or bogeys, the tournament proved to be a success by the simple fact that there aren’t too many better ways to spend a sunny weekday morning than cruising from hole to hole in a golf cart while gabbing with friends.

“You know, it’s like if the food is good and you don’t hear too many people gripe … it must have gone pretty well,” said Tilly Brunello, the Marshall for this year’s tournament.

Scores of ladies from Gilroy and Morgan Hill helped make up a portion of the field, representing their respective public courses from around Santa Clara County.

Gilroy natives Judy Ames and Janet Larson had no complaints concerning the tournament, except about a shot here and there.

“I think one more day and I’d have this course down,” Ames said.

Added Larson, “I want to play well, but if not it’s not the end of the world.”

One player from Gilroy that did perform near the top was Terry Mayes, last year’s runner-up in the championship flight.

“I had four birdies but boy did I rack [bogies] up today,” Mayes said on Tuesday. She finished her second round with a score of 79, good for third place overall.

Morgan Hill’s Lani Gadsby played in the third flight, and while she didn’t finish in the top four of her division, she did say there was one simple reason she came back for the sixth year in a row.

“It’s fun,” Gadsby said.
