Gilroy High’s varsity girls basketball got rolled by the San Benito Lady ‘Balers Friday night, losing 61-41.

The Mustangs trailed by as much as 30 points in the contest and had trouble getting into their offense all game due to constant pressure by the Lady ‘Balers. Gilroy committed over 30 turnovers.

“That’s what we’ve been doing all season long,” San Benito head coach Dave Kaplanski said. “Our offense is predicated off of our defense.

Vanessa Farias led San Benito in scoring with 14 points. Lauren Ademek added 11 points for the Lady ‘Balers while Kelsey Russell and Victoria Aguilera both pitched in eight.

“Our defense has always been our strength,” San Benito forward Bri Romero said. “Our offense is coming along, but defense is what wins championships.”

The Lady ‘Balers’ defense definitely led to a well-rounded effort on offense, which left their coach thrilled with the performance.

“This was our best game as a team all season,” Kaplanski said.

For Gilroy, the same could not be said.

“I don’t want to make excuses, but right now we’re just a practice team,” Gilroy head coach James Wilkins said. “We look extremely good in practice … but when the lights have gone on, we’ve been mediocre.”

Vanessa Wilkins had a team high 11 points for Gilroy.

“I donlt have an answer right now, but we’re not going to give up,” Coach Wilkins said. “Whatever it takes we’re going to find it.”

San Benito is now 12-4 overall, 3-0 in Tri-County Athletic League play. Gilroy dropped to 4-9 (0-2 TCAL), losing its fifth-straight game.

Junior Varsity Note:

Gilroy was able to hold on in the final minutes, outlasting the Lady ‘Balers 32-28.

Point guard Sovi Nou led the Mustangs with 12 points. Angel Senior had eight points for Gilroy.

San Benito’s leading scorers were Danielle Acosta and Kim Warner, each with seven.

Freshmen Note:

Demornay Granado grabbed 15 rebounds to go with five points to help lead Gilroy to a 33-29 victory over San Benito.

Emily Costa had eight points for Gilroy.
