GILROY – The last time the Gilroy High and St. Francis C.C.C girls basketball teams met, the title of the Mustang Classic was up for grabs.

The Sharks toppled the Lady Mustangs (4-1) on their home court in a gritty defensive struggle 33-28.

Wednesday night in Gilroy, just five days after the previous meeting, the Mustangs were able to enact a bit of revenge, defeating the Sharks 53-35.

“They saw it as a revenge game and that’s how they approached it,” said head coach Tim Jones. “They wanted to prove something. (St. Francis) is a well-balanced team, but a team they should beat. They played more to their potential tonight.”

After trailing by two at the half, the Mustangs dictated play in the final 16 minutes.

GHS outscored the Sharks 31-11 in the second half, including a defensively dominant fourth quarter in which the Mustangs held the Sharks to just five points.

“I am really happy with the way we are playing defense,” Jones said. “We recover well and we move to the ball.”

It took the Mustangs a little less than four minutes into the third quarter to take the lead. Senior guard Sovi Nou came open off of a screen and buried a wide-open 3-pointer that gave the Mustangs a 29-26 lead, which they would not relinquish.

Nou scored seven of her team-high 12 points in the big second half. After playing much of the game in foul trouble, senior Laura Steele came to life in the final period, rattling off the Mustangs final six points. She finished with 11 on the night.

Junior Chelsea hill contributed 10 points, while junior Lauren Rhodes had nine and senior Lindsey Foster dropped in eight points to round out the Mustangs top scorers.

GHS hosts Mountain View on Monday.

JV NOTE

Despite having only seven players on the roster, the junior varsity Lady Mustangs remained unbeaten (5-0) in the early portion of the season, dispatching St. Francis C.C.C 59-37 on Wednesday night.

Ashlee Williams scored a team-high 18 points to pace the Mustangs.

GHS triumphed over the Sharks in the championship of last weekend’s 23rd annual Mustang Classic.
