Boys’ Volleyball Falls to San Benito, Drops First TCAL Match
By Staff Reports

The Gilroy Mustangs softball team held Westmont scoreless for six innings en route to a 5-2 win Wednesday in Campbell. The Mustangs now sit at 2-0.

In the second inning, Amanda Tellez and Patty Olvera each got on base with hits. Freshman standout Jasmine Perez followed with an RBI single. In the third inning, a lead-off walk by Kylie Herrada was worked into a run by Liz Inez’s sacrifice fly. A lead-off single in the fourth, followed by an errant Westmont throw, put Olvera on third. Catcher Brittany Balanesi’s grounder brought Olvera home for Gilroy’s third run.

In the fifth inning, Lauryn Chris (bunt single) was moved to third by a bunt single by Inez. Tellez’s fielder’s choice scored Chris to make it 4-0 Gilroy. In the seventh inning, Gilroy scored its fifth and final run with an RBI triple off of the hot bat of Inez. It was her second triple and fifth RBI of the season.

Throughout the game, clutch defense and pitching by Sarah Villar (6 K’s, 2 hits) kept the Warriors off the base paths through six innings. With three outs left in the game and a shut out in sight, Gilroy gave up two late runs off of a base hit and a walk followed by a wild pitch as Westmont attempted a late comeback.

The Lady Mustangs will take on Wilcox, St. Francis and Soquel today at the Circle of Champions tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex in Sunnyvale.

Boys’ Volleyball Falls to San Benito Drops First TCAL Match

The Gilroy boys’ volleyball team has gotten away with slow starts this season. But not against San Benito Thursday in Hollister.

The Mustangs dropped their first league game to the ‘Balers, 23-25, 26-24, 25-21, 23-25, 18-20. Gilroy now sits at 10-5 overall and 4-1 in TCAL.

Vinny DeLorenzo (19 kills), Ryan Chisolm (15 kills), Travis Graham (8 kills) and Jason Conrad (7 kills, 6 blocks) led Gilroy.

“We just got into a shooting match with them,” said Gilroy head coach Craig Martin. “Somewhere along the line, we have to realize we can’t take anybody lightly.”

After losing the first game, Gilroy came back from being down 11-17 in the second game to win. But the ‘Balers retaliated with the momentum in the fourth and fifth sets.

“We just kind of lost pressure and we lost it,” Martin said.

The Mustangs are back in action Tuesday at home against Sobrato at 6:15m.

Boys’ Golf Wins

Gilroy posted its best score of the season to beat San Benito and North Salinas Thursday at Ridgemark Golf Course in Hollister.

The Mustangs (201) narrowly edged out the ‘Balers (213), who took second. North Salinas did not post a team score.

Gilroy’s Jordan Miller shot even par (37) to finish in second behind medalist Diego Navarro (36) of San Benito.

Jami Binowski and Ryan Clark both shot 40’s. Chad Wilson (41), Stephen Freeth (43) and Daniel Dockendorf (44) rounded out the Mustang effort.

The win was crucial for Gilroy, which was tied with San Benito for third in TCAL going into the meet. A third-place finish in league could qualify a team for CCS.

“It keeps us in the running to try to end up in second or third to qualify for CCS,” said Gilroy head coach Kari Williams. “It was a season best for Jami and Ryan and a personal best for Jordan in competition.”
