Gilroy – There was just one blemish in the Gilroy girls basketball team’s otherwise fine game against Alisal Saturday.
In the 62-39 defeat of the Trojans at GHS, the Mustangs made just six of 18 free throws.
Though the poor performance from the charity stripe clearly didn’t affect the outcome of the game, it did affect Monday’s practice.
“They’ve been running,” said Gilroy head coach Kari Williams.
With the win, the Mustangs improved to 11-4 overall.
The Mustangs didn’t waste time in blowing out Alisal for the second time this season. Behind the lights-out shooting of sophomore guard Vanessa Wilkins, Gilroy took a 21-9 lead after the first quarter. Wilkins, who finished with a game-high 20 points had 10 points after the first quarter and 15 at the half.
“She played her typical game, just really good aggressive defense, outstanding on the boards, diving after loose balls, ” Williams said.
All but one player on the Gilroy roster scored. Behind Wilkins was senior forward Katherine Hussey with 11 points and senior point guard Kristen Campos with nine. Senior guard Marissa Nowakowski and junior forward Dana Schoeneman each had four points.
“It was a really good game, a pretty rough game,” said Williams, whose team held Alisal to just six points in the third quarter. “Free throw shooting really was the only difficult part of the game.”
But the coach isn’t worried about the team’s foul shooting woes and knows it will come around.
“Maybe it’s hard when there’s no pressure (in the game). We shoot them all the time, even though it might not appear that way,” Williams joked.
Next up for Gilroy is Live Oak at home Wednesday at 7pm. The 7-7 Acorns are coming off a big win over Notre Dame. It was the first-ever Tri-County Athletic League loss for the Spirits.
With Live Oak moving to the Blossom Valley Athletic League, Wednesday’s game will be the last time Gilroy will host the Acorns in a league game. Williams would like to see her squad shoot better in that game, but it will be business as usual otherwise.
“I think we’re going to stick with the things that have been working,” she said.
