GILROY – Moving to a new league this season as well as matching up with some stiff competition to start the schedule has given the Anchorpoint Christian softball team several hurdles to clear.

But with a 3-2 record, the Lady Warriors have proven to be up to the task. Now part of the Mission Trail Athletic League – Coastal Division, Anchorpoint has lost close games to larger schools such as Gonzalez and Alvarez while beating teams from schools of similar stature like Soledad , Anzar (23-4) and University of San Francisco. The goal for the year, Lady Warriors coach Alicia Hernandez said, is to win a league title and gain an at-large berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs

“I would love to do it,” Hernandez said. “We’re a pretty strong candidate for it.”

Taking Gonzalez to nine innings before losing in part due to the international tiebreaker rule, in which a runner is placed at second base to start the ninth, Anchorpoint fell 3-2.

Ellen Pearce hit a home run, Adrianna Osuna was 3-for-4 and pitcher Danielle Kinoshita kept batters off balance for much of the contest.

The Lady Warriors rebounded by pounding league foe Anzar 23-4. After scoring two runs in each of the first five innings to lead 10-4, Anchorpoint exploded in the sixth with 13 runs.

Pearce, Kinoshita and Shayna Osuna all went 3-for-6 at the plate, while Adrianna Osuna was 4-for-6 with two doubles.

Gaining a two-game winning streak with a 9-2 victory over University, the Lady Warriors again got major contributions from Pearce (2-for-4, HR), Adrianna Osuna (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI), Brooke Shrull, who knocked a double, and Kristi Osuna, who pitched the first four innings before Kinoshita closed out the game.

Alvarez topped Anchorpoint in the next game 4-0, but the Lady Warriors were able to keep the Eagles scoreless for four innings before giving way later in the contest.

“We held them only to four hits so we did really well,” Hernandez said, noting that her team also played strong in the field by committing just one error.

An 8-5 win against Soledad on March 18 was the most recent game for the Lady Warriors, who are tentatively scheduled to resume play on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Greenfield for the second league contest of the season.
