The wife of a soldier with Gilroy ties who died Christmas Day 2009 will be given a commemorative box containing her husband’s medals Saturday evening in Milpitas.

A group of corrections officers at the Elmwood Correctional Complex in Milpitas who honor local families of fallen soldiers will present Patty Gutierrez the box to honor her husband, David, a U.S. Army staff sergeant who was killed by a hidden roadside bomb while on patrol in Afghanistan.

“As soon as we heard, we started working on it,” Elmwood Officer Juan Coronado said. “But we waited to give it to her because we thought it might be too soon to be reminded of that.”

Her husband’s awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge and Air Assault Badge.
