Gilroy – On Thursday morning 115 Gilroy High School students gathered in the high school’s college center and received awards for accomplishments noted by their teachers.

Jose Hernandez, director of the GHS Latinos Program and a science teacher, the group that sponsors the event, said about five times a year he sends an e-mail to staff members asking them to nominate an Hispanic male student who has improved in some way.

The award is mainly to highlight students who have managed to improve their grades, schoolwork or just their overall attitude.

“Anything positive,” Hernandez said.

The GHS Latinos Program is specifically for Hispanic males.
