SANTA CLARA – Santa Clara University’s Center of Performing Arts begins its theater season with performances of the play “The Learned Ladies,” today through Sunday and Wednesday through Nov. 22 at the Mayer Theater.

Written by French playwright Moliere and translated into rhyming couplets by Pulitzer prize-winning poet Richard Wilber, the comedy examines the folly of intellectual posturing and matchmaking.

Chrysale’s household is turned upside down when his wife attempts to turn their home into a learning salon and is charmed by a charlatan poet she believes to be an excellent match for her daughter, Henriette.

Havoc ensues as the timid father and his daughter support a different candidate as bridegroom.

“The Learned Ladies,” is directed by Mark Monday, coordinator of acting and musical theater at SCU. “Our department strives to give students opportunities to work in as many different styles as possible in a four-year period.

“The Learned Ladies,” which is a comedy of manners, reflects our endeavor to include diverse styles in our main stage season each year.”

Monday has taught at West Virginia University, Fairmont State College, Ohio University, and the University of Georgia, where he was awarded a Lilly Fellowship. Prior to teaching, he worked as a professional actor, director, and producer. Monday has a bachelor of fine arts degree in acting from the North Carolina School of the Arts and his masters in acting from West Virginia University. Monday is also working toward obtaining master teacher status from the Michael Chekhov Association.

“The Learned Ladies” single ticket prices range $5 to $14. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Season subscriptions are on sale, and include “The Learned Ladies,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” and “Kiss Me Kate.” For tickets or more information, contact the Center of Performing Arts box office at 408-554-4015.
