Have some compassion for the poor people ‘stealing’ the recycling

Dear Editor,

How mean-spirited a person are you Christine Taylor? Do you not see that these individuals are poor?

Several times this last year I have encountered these “vagabonds” as you refer to them “stealing” my recyclable cans and I have been asked if it was OK. Of course it was OK was my response. Why wouldn’t it be?

Christine Taylor can you not relate to poor people? Why did you not state that you felt uncomfortable with these “thieves” who do not belong in your neighborhood stealing your recyclables? I could somewhat understand that.

Your silly listing of the city ordinance being broken pales to breaking the standard of being a compassionate adult.

GHS choirs under the direction of Phil Robb a community treasure

Dear Editor,

Last week, my wife and I had the wonderful opportunity to hear the performance given by the Gilroy High School choirs at the Gilroy Presbyterian Church. What a terrific musical experience and great group of musicians under the stewardship of instructor Phil Robb.

I hope others in the community will join all of us at Glen Loma Group to give a little help to Phil in raising the needed funds for the upcoming Carnegie Hall trip.

Gilroy is very lucky to have Phil Robb and his very talented “kids.” Phil you are truly one of the treasures of our community.

Craig P. Filice, Gilroy

Editor’s note: If you’re interested in helping out the GHS choir for the upcoming trip to Carnegie Hall, contact Phil Robb at Ph**********@*********ca.us or call 847-2424 ext. 8567.

Lender might have been shady, but lying about income is a crime

Dear Editor,

The Fifth Amendment guarantees us a privilege against self-incrimination. However, this constitutional right can be waived. So, one ought to think twice before admitting defrauding one’s lender, with or without the help of one’s agent, e.g., realtor, mortgage broker, lawyer, editor, etc. It’s one thing to endure civil law liability, but a whole different thing when you violate our criminal laws.

Support for legalizing gay marriage a manifestation of humanism

Dear Editor,

I like Lisa Pampuch’s recent column on gay marriage. Her column reveals to me that she is a classic example of a progressive woman.

I gather her world outlook is based on the religion of humanism. Humanism has situational ethics as one of its fundamental concepts: “Nothing is right or wrong only insofar that thinking makes it so.” So it is with same-sex marriage. There is nothing wrong with it except that it makes mockery of traditional marriage.

In “Fiddler on the Roof,” the opening scene finds Topol at the reins of a horse-drawn coach singing, “Tradition, tradition … that’s all that holds us together.” It’s the glue for the Jewish nation which allows them to survive oppression and pogroms. You’d be surprised – tradition is a major factor in today’s society. Just think of our Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter traditions.

Pampuch also writes “biblical arguments have no place in deciding our laws or our constitution.” She exhibits an ignorance of the history of our laws which are based upon the natural law, as given to the prophet Moses, and these laws were later codified by the English jurist, William Blackstone.

These English codified laws served as a foundation for our founding fathers in establishing our independence, our constitution and our nation. The Mosaic law, or natural law, does have absolutes; there are absolute values which differentiate good from evil, right from wrong, and justice from injustice. It is the denial of the absolute values that promotes same-sex marriage.

If you have no moral standards, and if situational ethics governs your thinking and actions, then, by all means, support Ms. Pampuch and the legalization of gay marriage.
