Last chance to see a fantastic Dr. Suess-based local musical

Dear Editor,

Gilroy’s Odyssey Theater Company has returned after a two-year hiatus with the Dr. Seuss inspired musical Seussical.

The play interweaves several of Dr. Seuss’ classic stories, including Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, as well as Horton Hears a Who! I attended last Friday’s performance at Gilroy High School and am glad to see Odyssey Theater’s latest production encapsulates their mission of education and entertainment.

Seussical plays host to a talented cast of children and adults who successfully embody the quirky spirit of Dr. Seuss. Megan Hamilton’s turn as Gertrude McFuzz and the Cat in the Hat, Alan Dronek, are particularly entertaining. The inventive spirit of Seussical comes across particularly in the duet, “Notice Me, Horton,” performed by Ms. Hamilton as Gertrude McFuzz and Horton the Elephant, brilliantly played by Peter McElheny. The set, beautifully designed and constructed by Ethan Stocks and Deborah Schwarz, serves as a fantastic backdrop to this original and eccentric take on Dr. Seuss’ classic stories. I encourage everyone to attend!

Lisa Hewitt, Gilroy

Editor’s Note: Final performances at the Gilroy High theater, 750 W. 10th St. Showtimes are at 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday; Sunday at 2 p.m. Details: www.odysseytheatre.org.

Public insurance option has to be part of health care reform

Dear Editor,

Having a public insurance option is just that: an option, not a government plot to take over our health care. It will create real competition for private health insurers, who have hijacked our health care system for their own profit. The strident voices that are disrupting Town Hall meetings and trying to drown out real debate are being fed, misled and funded by corporate lobbyists. Real Americans want REAL health care reform, and the public option is a vital part of that reform.
