After a hectic, technology-impaired weekend, computers at Santa Clara County libraries are up and running again.

Computers systems at the Gilroy Library failed Friday afternoon, leaving staff scrambling to keep business running as usual, Community Librarian Lani Yoshimura said. As of Tuesday afternoon, however, everything was back to normal, with the exception of a few minor glitches, she said.

Online computer services were interrupted when a piece of hardware failed, affecting libraries from Milpitas to Gilroy. Library staff quickly identified the problem and ordered the necessary part, which didn’t ship until Monday, County Librarian Melinda Cervantes explained in a notice to library patrons. Libraries were left without Internet or telephone service until Tuesday morning.

Despite the crash, library patrons were still able to check out books and browse library materials.

“Even in a technology dependent society, it is refreshing to note that all county libraries were open during this period and knowledgeable librarians were ready to assist patrons using books, the original technology, to answer information and reading requests,” County Librarian Melinda Cervantes said.
