Elizabeth Rodriguez recently punched her way to a state title, taking a 2007 California Silver Gloves Championship by knocking out her opponent.
She will be competing in Norwalk, Calif. at the Marriott Hotel on Jan. 3-6 for a Western Regional title.
Fellow 13-year olds Derek Shingu and Jonathan Casaca were also impressive in their road to state, with each taking a Northern California Silver Gloves title.
Working out daily at the Gilroy Boxing Gym on 6th street, all three 13-year olds spent the past months training at least two hours a day – including sparring, hitting the bag, double bag and shadow boxing.
The three, all part of Left2Right Boxing Club, traveled to American Canyon for the Northern California Silver Gloves Championship on Saturday, Nov. 17.
Anticipating at least one fight in the tournament, Shingu and Rodriguez advanced to state via walk over since no one else qualified in their weight class, while Casaca was able to win his bout.
Moving on to the State Championships this past weekend, it was the first trip for Rodriguez and the second for Shingu and Casaca. Shingu and Casaca were both able to place second in California while Rodriguez will continue her quest for a national championship.
