Kinkel scholarship fundraiser
Gilroy – The Kinkel family and the Erin Kinkel Memorial Scholarship Award Committee are hosting a fundraiser and “safety day” at Maui Tacos Saturday to benefit the scholarship fund for South County high school seniors.
Fifteen percent of all sales made between 11am and 6pm at the 890 Renz Lane restaurant in Pacheco Pass Center will benefit the scholarship fund.
Prizes – including a stay in Maui, Jamba Juice and It’s a Grind packages – will be raffled off and a Hawaiian band will provide music for hula dancers between 1 and 3pm.
Driving safety is also a theme for the afternoon, and the California Highway Patrol will be conducting carseat checks, while the Gilroy Fire Department will give safety presentations. “Mustang” blue wristbands reading “Drive Responsibly” in memory of Kinkel will be sold for $2, as well.
Scott and Miki Kinkel launched the scholarship this spring in memory of their daughter, Erin, who was killed last Aug. 1 in a car crash while riding unrestrained in the bed of a pick-up truck. The scholarships will be awarded to students planning to attend college who have made a positive impact on people’s lives and who make responsible choices.
