Renaming of school on board agenda
Gilroy – The facility may not be the only part of Las Animas Elementary demolished when the school, which is set to open in 2007, is rebuilt on the southwest side of Gilroy. Las Animas may also receive a new name.
The Gilroy Unified School District board will consider establishing a committee to rename the elementary school during Thursday’s meeting. Board policy requires the creation of Citizen’s Advisory Committee when naming a new school or renaming a facility.
The Superintendent Edwin Diaz said the renaming is a good idea since the school will be in a different area of town, no longer near Las Animas Park.
In other district news, the board will be asked to approve a new transportation complex design. During a study session in November the board went over several options for the facility which includes an area for bus maintenance, break/training room and office and bus wash. The total cost is expected to reach $1.4 million.
The board will also hear an update of the district’s food service program. The presentation will include break-downs of cost and an update on the new Gilroy High School Student Center.
