Discuss the Future of the New Gilroy Library
Gilroy – Residents can join the Gilroy Library Commission, the Library Expansion Committee and city and county library officials to discuss the future of the Gilroy Library. The main item of business will be how to finance the expected $30 million project. The meeting takes place at 7pm Thursday in the Community Meeting Room, Gilroy Police Station, 7301 Hanna St.
Volunteer Translators Needed at RotaCare
Gilroy – The RotaCare clinic in Gilroy is desperately in need of volunteer translators (Spanish). The clinic is open Tuesday evenings, and volunteers would not need to come every week, more like once or twice per month. Even if they could only make a short-term commitment for, say, one or two months, that would be very helpful.

Eat a Pie and Benefit GHS Grad Night
Gilroy – Fundraiser for 2008 Sober Grad Night. Pies range in price from $13 to $14 (apple, pumpkin and olallieberry). Pies will be sold until Oct. 26.

Sign up now for Halloween Hold ’em Tourney
Gilroy – Registration is being accepted for the third annual Halloween Hold ’em Tournament scheduled for 10am Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Gilroy Senior Center. The 15th in a series of popular No Limit Texas Hold ’em events staged by the Gilroy Community Services Department, the Halloween Hold ’em accepts four-person teams to play. Registration deadline is 4pm Friday. Proceeds benefit City of Gilroy senior, teen and youth programs. The team entry fee is $60.

Free Computer Workshops in Spanish
Gilroy – Work2Future, Gilroy One-Stop and Gavilan College Contract Education will offer computer skills classes for Spanish speakers: Introduction to Computers and the Internet and Introduction to Word. Instruction will be in Spanish. There is no charge. Classes take place form 9 10 11:30am Thursday Oct. 18 and 25, at Gilroy One Stop: 7800 Arroyo Circle, Suite A.

Outhouse Archaeology with Mark Huddleston
Gilroy – Mark Huddleston will illuminate Gilroy’s past through an examination of its refuse found in his outhouse excavations at noon Saturday, at Gilroy Museum, 195 Fifth St. Learn about Gilroy’s history through the interpretation of outhouse treasures. Space is limited, RSVP is required. Refreshments provided by the Gilroy Historical Society.

Auditions Scheduled for ‘Swing Shift’
Gilroy – The Gilroy Community Services Department and John Bisceglie are conducting auditions for “Swing Shift.” Come be a part of this 1940s all singing, all swinging musical revue, performing at Gavilan College in January.
Auditions will be held Saturday, at the Gilroy Senior Center, 7371 Hanna St. Ages 5 to 9 at 10am, 10 to 14 at noon and 15 through adult at 2pm.

San Martin – The next meeting of the South County Democratic Club will be held at 10am Saturday, at the San Martin Lions Club Hall, 12415 Murphy Ave., San Martin. Refreshments will be served.

Submit Award Nominations Now
Gilroy – The Gilroy Chamber of Commerce invites the community to submit nominations for leading businesses and citizens to be recognized for the 2007 Educator of the Year, Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Small Business of the Year and Large Business of the Year. It takes a little time to make a nomination, but the recognition that is so richly deserved lasts forever.
Forms are available in the chamber office lobby, 7471 Monterey St. If you would like one mailed, call 842-6437. If you would like the forms e-mailed, e-mail your request to ch*****@****oy.org. Deadline for submitting nominations is Friday, Oct. 26.
Award recipients will be honored Feb. 9, at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club.
