Gage says no to minimum wage increase

San Jose – Santa Clara Supervisor Don Gage has decided not to endorse AB 1835, a bill that would raise California’s minimum wage from $6.75 to $7.75 by 2008.

Gage said he supports the concept of an increase, but has concerns about future “automatic adjustments” promised in the bill.

“An automatic increase in California’s minimum wage does not take into consideration the state of the economy,” Gage said. “While on the service the increase seems fair, it may have negative impacts during difficult economic times.”

County supervisors voted 4-1 to support the bill. The state’s lowest wage was raised in 2002 from $6.25. California has the sixth highest minimum wage in the country.

Youth highlight family concert

Gilroy – Youth will highlight the family concert of the South Valley Symphony’s performance at 4pm Saturday February 11, 2006 at the Gavilan College Theater. Music director and conductor Henry Mollicone has announced that Miss Eileen Chen will be the featured soloist performing the first movement of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 in C. Mr. Evan Jeng will be the featured violin soloist playing No. 3 for violin and orchestra by Camille Saint-Saens. The three movements are Allegro non troppo, Andantino quasi allegratto, and molto moderato e maestoso. Despite their age, both of these students have shown remarkable talent and are sure to put on a very pleasing performance according to Mollicone.

Once again the symphony has invited back the dancers of the South Valley Ballet (Juliet LaPointe-Smith, director and choreographer).

Tickets are available at Porcella’s Music, Estate Furniture Gallery, Carole’s Hallmark, Booksmart in Morgan Hill, the Pinnacle, and the San Juan Bautista Mission Gallery. Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and students. Tickets will also be available at the theater box office 45 minutes prior to the performance.
