Ballet rescheduled for next weekend

Morgan Hill – South Valley Ballet Company has been forced to cancel this weekend’s showing of the Nutcracker Ballet because construction of the new theater at Sobrato High School has not been finalized.

All tickets will be honored for the new dates, which are Friday, Dec. 16 at 7pm and Saturday, Dec. 17 at 12:30pm. Refunds are available.

The ballet’s goal is to bring classical productions to South Valley. Many dancers come from Morgan Hill and Gilroy and a few from San Jose and Hollister.

Gilroy Hotshots tryout Saturday

San Martin – Tryouts Saturday from 9 to 10am for pitchers and catchers; 10am to 12:30pm for all other positions. Tryouts will be held at 11471 Carls Court, San Martin.

Celebrate ‘The Virgin of Guadalupe’

Gilroy – The St. Mary Church Spanish Council and the Cursillistas Committee invite the community to celebrate “The Virgin of Guadalupe” Sunday.

The procession begins at 4pm at the corner of Eigleberry and 10th streets, and ends at St. Mary Church at the corner of First and Church streets.

Line up prior to procession at 3pm.

Santa Claus is coming to town

Gilroy – Santa is coming to San Ysidro Park Wednesday, from 2 to 5pm. Goodie bags will be given out to the first 400.

Have fun with arts and crafts

Gilroy – Glen View’s Home and School Club presents Family Arts & Crafts Night. The crafts offered are based on a character development theme entitled “Drawing on Character” from Crayola.

The Glen View Home & School Club’s Family Arts & Crafts Night is Wednesday, from 6 to 7:30pm in the multi-purpose room at the school, 600 W. Eighth St.

Snacks and drinks will be served and resources will be available in English and Spanish.

SV String Quartet’s Christmas concert

Morgan Hill – The Gavilan College Choir, along with the South Valley String Quartet will present their Christmas Concert at 7:30pm, Sunday at Advent Lutheran Church, 16870 Murphy Ave., Morgan Hill. Admission is free.

The choir will be singing music from Mozart, Beethoven, and Howells. Also included in the program are holiday favorites.

The evening will begin with the South Valley String Quartet and choir performing the Schubert Mass in G.

The performance of the Mass celebration will be repeated Saturday Dec. 17, with the South Valley Symphony in the Gavilan College Theater at 4pm.

Speaker endorses Phares for Assembly

Sacramento – Former California Assembly Speaker Pro Tem Fred Keeley endorsed Watsonville City Councilwoman Ana Ventura Phares to replace outgoing Assemblyman Simón Salinas, D- Salinas.

“I [am] impressed with her leadership skills and her ability to bring people together to achieve common goals,” Keeley said. “Sacramento needs effective legislators like Ana and that’s why I’m endorsing her candidacy for the State Assembly.”

Also running for Salinas’s Assembly seat is Bob Perkins, executive director of the Monterey County Farm Bureau.

Perkins, a Republican, vied for the seat in 2004, losing to Salinas, who represents Gilroy and is ineligible for another term.

Salinas, whose term expires at the end of 2006, will take on incumbent Senator Jeff Denham, R-Merced, for the 12th Senate District seat.
