Returned Rescue Boat Cost City $2K

Gilroy – Though a stillwater rescue boat bought by the Gilroy Fire Department in March is gone, the purchasing snafu cost the city more than $2,000.

Tim’s Zodiac Marine charged the city of Gilroy a $2,173 restocking fee for the return of the $11,000 Zodiac rescue boat, according to Phaedra Hernandez, purchasing coordinator for the city of Gilroy.

Former interim Fire Chief Hugh Holden purchased the boat after a misunderstanding with City Administrator Jay Baksa, who asked him to put together a proposal before moving forward with the purchase of a rescue boat.

Living Through Learning Classes

Gilroy – Gavilan College is offering free Living Through Learning classes for adults ages 55 and older.

Classes such as Film Classics, Creative Writing, Internet Literacy and Mindful Stress Reduction will be offered at locations throughout Gilroy, Morgan Hill and Hollister at senior centers and residential communities.

Courses start in late August and September and may run for eight to 16 weeks..

Positions Available on Open Space Authority

Gilroy – Applicants are needed to fill seven positions on the Citizen’s Advisory Committee of the Santa Clara County Open Space Authority.

Committee members are appointed by the Board of Directors to serve two-year terms during which they provide public input to Open Space about policy matters, provide communication to the board, and communicate with the public about the goals and accomplishments of Open Space.

The Open Space Authority seeks to preserve open space to create a balance of urban and rural areas.

Prospective committee members must reside within the Authority’s boundaries.

Although the city of Gilroy is not a part of the Open Space Authority, unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County, and the city of Morgan Hill, are members of the Authority.

The committee meets at 7pm on the fourth Monday of each month, except December.
