E-minded Supe Joins Board

Gilroy –  Santa Clara County Supervisor Liz Kniss has been elected as co-chair for the board of directors of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, a consortium of business, government and academic leaders. The group is currently spearheading an effort to bring free wireless Internet access to 1,500 square miles stretching from Fremont to south Gilroy, west to Santa Cruz and as far north as San Mateo.

As a former mayor of Palo Alto, Kniss led the effort to make Palo Alto the first wired city in the nation, organizing NetDay96 – a collaborative effort between schools and business that connected thousands of children throughout the state to the internet for the first time.

Last chance for Bach to Blues 2006

Gilroy – Tickets for Bach to Blues 2006, Friday Feb. 24, can still be purchased at Porcella’s Music in downtown Gilroy, at the Gavilan College Bookstore on the Gavilan College main campus or by phone at 846-4973. Tickets are $30 for V.I.P. seats, $15 for general admission, and $10 for seniors/students.

Bach to Blues is a benefit concert that raises money for music education at Gavilan College through a showcase of the talents of faculty and former and current students.

A voice for animals essay contest

Gilroy – High school students are invited to enter the Humane Education Network’s 16th annual essay contest. Students must submit a double-spaced, thousand word manuscript that examines either the mistreatment of one animal species or a cause of animal suffering and measures to reduce it. We are looking for in-depth analysis and original thought in addressing these issues as they concern practices in the U.S.

First prize is $500, second $250, third $100. Deadline for submissions of entries is March 2. Results will be announced May 31.
