City Council Candidate forum

Gilroy – City officials will hold an informational session for residents hoping to run for one of three City Council seats this fall. Topics will include filing deadlines for nomination papers and other campaign-related issues, as well as the responsibilities of serving on the council. The session takes place June 7 at 7pm in City Hall, at 7351 Rosanna St.

Williamson Act decision Tuesday

Gilroy – The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will adopt a plan Tuesday to change the way it administers the Williamson Act, the state law that provides tax relief to farmers.

The supervisors may suspend issuance of new contracts, adopt interim guidelines for evaluating current contracts and take the first official step toward evicting non-compliant land owners.

County officials have hosted several meetings on the topic, but for the first time last week sent out more than 1,500 letters notifying all Williamson Act landowners of the pending changes.

The meeting is at 2pm in board chambers, Tuesday, 70 W. Hedding St., San Jose. Public comment is welcome and may be submitted to Ph***********@********ov.org.

Fundraiser for scholarship

Gilroy – The Kinkel family and the Erin Kinkel Memorial Scholarship Award Committee are hosting a fundraiser and “safety day” at Maui Tacos Saturday to benefit the scholarship fund for South County high school seniors.

Fifteen percent of all sales made between 11am and 6pm at the 890 Renz Lane restaurant in Pacheco Pass Center will benefit the scholarship fund.

Prizes – including a six-night stay in a condo on Maui donated by Maui Tacos, as well as Jamba Juice and It’s a Grind packages – will be raffled off. “Mustang” blue wristbands reading “Drive Responsibly” in memory of Kinkel will be sold for $2, as well.

Driving safety is also a theme for the afternoon, and the California Highway Patrol will be conducting carseat checks.

Scott and Miki Kinkel launched the scholarship this spring in memory of their daughter, Erin, who was killed last Aug. 1 in a car crash while riding unrestrained in the bed of a pick-up truck. The scholarships will be awarded to students planning to attend college who have made a positive impact on people’s lives and who make responsible choices.
