Annual poker game benefits city programs
Gilroy – The second annual Texas Halloween Hold ‘Em Tournament will be hosted by the Gilroy Community Services Department at 10am Saturday Oct. 28 at the Gilroy Senior Center.
Team registration for the one-day recreational event begins at 2pm today. A maximum of 27 teams of four persons, 18-and-over, will be accepted. The team entry fee is $60, with all proceeds used to benefit the department’s senior, teen and youth programs.
The Halloween Hold ‘Em was the most successful of the eight tournaments offered within the past 15 months by the department. Eight tables of players began play. The tournament is prepared to handle up to 12 tables of players. Volunteers handle the role of dealers. Table sponsors assist with souvenirs and snacks.
The entry deadline for Halloween Hold ‘Em is 5pm Thursday Oct. 19.

Lights on Thursday for after school programs
Gilroy – The Gilroy Unified School District 21st Century After school Program will join more than 7,500 across the nation to host the Lights On After School event on Thursday afternoon.
The event is a series of nationwide rallies designed to recognize the significant role quality after school programs play in the lives of children, their families and the community at large. The community is invited to visit Eliot, El Roble, Las Animas and Glen View elementary schools from 2:30pm to 5:50pm and South Valley Middle School from 3:30pm to 6pm.
“Lights On,” provides visitors with a first-hand look at the range of activities provided.
Donations help homeless during winter months
Gilroy – St. Joseph’s Family Center and Articulate Solutions continue their efforts to keep the homeless in our community warm and dry throughout the winter. Donations are needed to help purchase and assemble Winter Survival Kits, which will contain items that will be helpful during the winter months: water repellent sleeping bags and jackets, backpacks, knit caps and gloves, flashlights and sundries such as toothpaste, socks and soap.
Checks may be written out to St. Joseph’s Family Center. Please mark your check “Winter Survival Kit.” Donations may be mailed to St. Joseph’s, 7950 Church St., Suite A, Gilroy or Articulate Solutions, 65 Fifth Ave., Suite 100, Gilroy.

Leadership Gilroy accepting applications for 2007 class
Gilroy – Leadership Gilroy is accepting applications for the 2007 class. The mission of Leadership Gilroy is to develop an informed and diverse group of leaders who will build Gilroy’s future. Now in its eleventh year, Leadership Gilroy has graduated more than 195 individuals who want to make a difference in the community in which they live and work.
The extensive nine-month program consists of three major components: skills training, community awareness, and personal development. Participants will also be required to complete a community project during the nine-month period. Participants meet monthly, January through September. The deadline to submit an application is Nov. 10.

South Valley Republican barbecue Saturday
San Martin – The South Valley Republican Women Federated club invites local Republicans (men and women) to join their annual South Valley Republican barbecue. Come meet special guests from the Gilroy chapter of “Operation Interdependence” – a volunteer organization dedicated to sending care packages to our troops overseas.
The barbecue is Saturday, from 4 to 7pm. $20 per person, children younger than 14 are free.

Election officers needed
Gilroy – The Registrar of Voters is looking for civic-minded volunteers to serve at the polls on election day. Becoming a volunteer election officer is a great way for voters to serve their communities and contribute to the democratic process. Election officers are paid a stipend of $85 or more. Volunteers are needed at polling places throughout Santa Clara County. Anyone who is registered to vote in California can be an election officer.
