At least two more weeks for Hecker Pass closure
Gilroy – The main route between Gilroy and Watsonville will remain closed for at least two more weeks, according to Caltrans.
Hecker Pass Highway past Summit Road west of Gilroy was shut down in mid-August for a $1.5 million project to widen the existing lanes and upgrade the barriers on a right-hand curve in the road.
Today is the 30th day of what is expected to be a 40-day road closure. Highway 152 remains open between Gilroy and Mt. Madonna County Park.
Caltrans has posted electronic signs along major highways in Santa Clara, San Benito and Monterey counties directing drivers to Highway 129, south of Gilroy, instead.
MACSA garners $2.8-million grant to build center in Gilroy
Gilroy – The Mexican American Community Services Agency has secured a $2.8-million grant earmarked to build a community learning center in Gilroy to house educational, recreational and social programs.
MACSA has been providing services in South County for more than 18 years. To date MACSA operates four service centers in Gilroy, including a successful charter high school.
This year MACSA Efforts are underway to secure an additional $1.5 million dollars to complete this long awaited state of the art community learning center.
This year MACSA celebrated a major milestone. In June, MACSA’s two college preparatory charter high schools each celebrated their first graduations ever.
MACSA’s El Portal Leadership Academy Charter High School in Gilroy offers a positive learning environment for future South County leaders to develop and flourish in the careers of their choice.
San Martin Lions Club nets $10k for Katrina victims
San Martin – The San Martin Lions Club has made a $10,000 donation to the Lions Clubs International Foundation Hurricane Relief Fund.
The money, raised largely through the club’s weekly bingo games, was diverted from a fund usually reserved for charity projects in the South County area.
Nationwide, Lions Clubs have raised about $270,000 for hurricane relief services ranging from food and clothing grants to eyeglass distribution.
Fundraiser to support local democrats Saturday
Gilroy – The South Santa Clara County Democratic Club invites the public to a fundraiser in support of Gilroy City Council candidates Peter Arellano and Charles Morales, featuring presentations by Assemblymembers Simon Salinas and John Laird.
Also the First Club Youth Service Recognition Awards with music, food and entertainment.
The event will be Saturday, from 4 to 7pm at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6070 Monterey St.
Suggested donation of $30/person. Sponsorships of $100 are available with special recognition provided.

Dinner aims to crush leukemia
Gilroy – A ‘Crush Leukemia’ Dinner, Barrel Tasting, Raffle and Auction will be held Saturday, Oct. 1 at 6:30pm at Solis Winery, 3920 Hecker Pass Hwy.
Tickets are $65 per person (Wine Club members $55 per person).
The ticket includes dinner and wines paired with each course and live entertainment.
Dinner includes salad, choice of one of three pasta dishes and tiramisu.
