Apply to vie for Garlic Queen
Gilroy – Contestant applications are now available for the 28th Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant. Packets are available at the Garlic Festival office, 7473 Monterey St.
Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Queen Pageant is a scholarship pageant. Contestants are judged on personal interview, speech, talent and evening gown. Scholarships will be awarded to many pageant contestants.
Applicants must be a resident of Gilroy, San Martin, Morgan Hill, Hollister, San Juan Bautista or Aromas; a single female who has never been married and has no children; a high school graduate by June 2006; and between the ages of 18 to 24 by July 2006. Deadline to enter is March 17 at 4:30pm.
The Miss Gilroy Garlic Festival Pageant is scheduled for Saturday, April 29, at 7pm at the Gavilan College Theater.

Neighborhood Academy 2006

Texas hold ’em tournament
Gilroy – The Silicon Valley Bulldogs, a local South County 16U Baseball Team that includes players from Gilroy and Morgan, is holding a fundraising event. Help the Bulldogs go to the Junior Olympics, in Phoenix, Ariz. Event includes Texas hold ’em tournament, bingo, free food and prizes, held Saturday, from 5pm to midnight at Machado School, 15130 Sycamore Avenue, Morgan Hill.

Kids discover the arts in 2006
Gilroy – The 2006 Kids Discover Arts event will be held Saturday, March 18, from 10am to 3pm at Ascension Solorsano Middle School, located at 7121 Grenache Way. More than 20 local artisans will conduct “hands-on” arts workshops and activities for children ages 5 to 11. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free and children are encouraged to wear paint friendly clothing.

Gilroy – The Gilroy Branch of the American Association of University Women is celebrating its 40th year. Become a Bonfante volunteer
Gilroy – Would you like to become a docent or volunteer in a beautiful garden setting? Do you enjoy working with people and working outdoors? The docent group at Bonfante Gardens is full of energy, fun and dedicated people. Previous horticulture experience of any sort is a bonus, but definitely not a requirement.

Crab Cioppino Feed and Dance
Gilroy – The Gilroy High School Athletic Association presents its 26th annual Crab Cioppino Feed and Dance. The crab feed will be held Saturday, May 13 at Don Christopher Ranch, 305 Bloomfield Road. Dinner is from 5:30 to 8pm with dancing from 8 to 11pm with Shaboom.
Tickets are $50 (21 and over only) and will be available at GHS between 8am and 4pm (cash or check only) or online at www.gilroyhighschool.com. Ticket sales are limited to 1,200.

Get art displayed in Washington
Washington – U.S. Representative Richard Pombo, R-Tracy, invites high school students in his district to participate in the 2006 Congressional Art Competition, “An Artistic Discovery.”
“This competition gives our young artists an opportunity to showcase their work in the U.S. Capitol,” Pombo said.
The competition provides artists the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and display artwork at the exhibit located in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol. Since 1982, hundreds of thousands of high school students have participated in the competition.
