The Christopher High Cougars junior varsity team showed improvements in all facets of its game Friday night, head coach Tim Pierlioni said, handing St. Josephs a 36-20 loss.

“We played much better on offense, the kids showed some good emotion and knew their assignments,” Pierlioni said. “Our defense, again, did a great job. Coach Tim Lemos did another great job coaching up the defense.”

Marcus Harrell caught two touchdown passes and also threw for another as the Cougars displayed a little razzle-dazzle late in the second quarter.

With backup quarterback Bryant Cid lined up to take the snap, Harrell came in motion to accept the hand off and executed the halfback option to perfection, hitting Cid for the touchdown.

“We practiced the play all week,’ Pierlioni said. “(Cid) has good speed and we brought him in for that play especially.”

Jorge Ramos returned the second half kick for a touchdown. Cid had two interceptions on defense.

Warriors Offense explodes for 70 points

Anchorpoint Christian’s 8-man football team put up big numbers in its first game of 2009, blowing out Christian 70-0 on Saturday.

Senior quarterback Josh Ignagni accounted for six touchdowns, throwing for four scores as quarterback, returning a punt 75 yards and a 50-yard interception return.

“I knew we could score points but it was our defense that surprised me,” said coach KC Adams. “They were exceptional.”

The Warriors are known for piling on the points, yet Adams said his team has to keep pressing forward heading into three key matchups over the next three weeks.

“Everything has to click,” Adams said. “The next three teams we play all live and breathe football. They are all well coached. We are going to have to be mentally and physically prepared.”

GHS boys water polo finishes 2nd

The GHS boys water polo finished second at the Watsonville Monterey Bay Shootout over the weekend, cruising through its first three games before being slowed down by Palma in the championship game 8-3.

“We didn’t play that good against Palma. It could’ve been a lot closer,” coach Tom Clark said. “The guys were pretty disappointed.”

The Mustangs breezed through the rest of the field, beating Watsonville 14-8, Silver Creek 14-1 and Harbor 14-8.

Field hockey defends tournament title

The GHS varsity field hockey team had a couple narrow escapes but managed to defend its title at the Leigh Roundup Tournament in San Jose.

The Mustangs played three games, two of which were decided by a single goal.

Elise Ogle scored the Game-1 winner against Chico, scoring off of a short corner with assists from Dani Hemeon and Alex Rose.

Freshman Kat Mah scored her first high school goal as Gilroy shut out Westmont,

7-0 in Game 2 before knocking off Monte Vista 1-0. Hemeon was credited with the lone goal.

“We haven’t played or practiced a game on grass this year so it was a true learning curve for us,” coach Adam Gemar said via e-mail. “We kept getting better, which was nice to see.”
