Former Gilroy High track stand out Peter Guenther, who is a freshman this year at UC Riverside, posted a 53.68 in the 400-meter hurdles at the Big West Finals to secure a spot at the Junior National meet.

As a senior at GHS, Guenther was a double winner at the 2009 Central Coast Section Track and Field Championships. Guenther clocked a 14.68 in the 110 hurdles and a 38.16 in the 300 to claim first place in each event.

Guenther’s younger brother, David, a junior at GHS, will participate in this season’s CCS championship meet as part of the third-ranked 4X100 relay team in the section.

The Junior Nationals will take place in June.

– In the interest of the 2010 Man and Women of the Year campaign, which is a massive fundraiser organized by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero will hold a charity 8-ball pool tournament June 2 at Garlic City Billiards.

The 8-Ball pool tournament will run from 7 to 10 p.m. The winner of a best two-of-three competition will receive a pair of boxing gloves signed by Guerrero. Tickets can be purchased beforehand at Garlic City Billiards or at the door the night of the event.

All proceeds will go toward the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

– Local boxer, 16-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez, a student at Christopher High School, defeated Alexia Sanchez last weekend in a tune-up fight for the National Junior Olympic Championship in North Carolina next month.

Rodriguez will represent Region 11 at 101-pounds, her father and coach Jerry Rodriguez said.

– Gilroy native Marcus Martinez, who has families in town, was named the new head coach for Valley Christian High School last week.

Growing up in Gilroy, Martinez attended Valley Christian and played basketball for the Warriors, and was part of the 2002 team that won the NorCal title, his mother Lynette wrote in an e-mail. Martinez spent last season as an assistant coach for the Warriors.

Valley Christian plays in the always competitive West Catholic Athletic League.

– Robert Fernandez Jr., who played one season on the junior varsity baseball team as a sophomore at GHS before moving to Texas with his family, signed an academic and athletic scholarship to attend Iowa Wesleyan College last week.

Fernandez Jr. attended Goose Creek memorial High School his senior year. He expects to be the team’s starting shortstop next season.

The Tigers are a NAIA school and are a part of the Midwest Collegiate Conference.
