Hollister – Léal Vineyards has taken home some early gold medals for the wine competition season.

The Hollister-based winery won gold at the Monterey and Hilton Head contests for its limited 2002 Estate Syrah. The wine was chosen for the top prize from thousands of entries.

Léal’s 2002 Estate Merlot also took gold at the Hilton Head Winefest.

Léal produced just 1,100 cases of the syrah and fewer than 840 cases of the merlot. Both wines sell for $24 and are available locally.

The relatively new winery, built in 1999, has already garnered attention for its wines, specifically, it was named one of the 20 best in the world in the October edition of “Food & Wine” magazine.

Léal Vineyards is located at 300 Maranatha Dr. in Hollister. The tasting room is open from 11am – 5pm daily. For more information, call (831) 636-1023.
