Gilroy – The Gilroy High swim team had its best CCS Championship showing in four years during the opening day preliminaries at Stanford University on Friday. Santiago Maciel, who was fighting lingering fatigue from last week’s TCAL Championships, had a big day and will be moving on to the finals in two events.

Maciel took 10th place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.14 and ninth place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.87.

Gilroy’s 200 freestyle relay team will also be moving on to the finals. Maciel, Lee Walton, Scott Castruita and Sam Whitaker finished with a time of 1:05.58 – not as fast a time as the team turned in at the TCAL Championships last Friday – but good enough to make it into the field of 16 relay teams which will be swimming today.

“I think the kids were really excited to be there,” said Gilroy head coach Tom Clark. “They were happy about the relay team getting in too. It was a successful day for us.”
