Girls’ Major All-Stars
On Tuesday, Gilroy’s Girls’ Major All-Stars beat Sunnyvale United 11-1 in four innings to take the Section 5 title and move on to the Northern California State Championship Tournament in Sunnyvale. The highlight of the game was Alissa Castro’s grand slam. Castro was also the starting pitcher, while Sam Perez pitched the final three innings. Melanie Morales had key RBI hits and Stephanie Rodriguez made solid defensive plays in center field.
The Majors team was scheduled to play its first-round Northern California championship at Washington Park in Manteca Friday at 8pm. A win would mean they play today at 2pm, while a loss would put them in a noon game on Sunday.
Girls’ Minor All-Stars
On Monday, the Gilroy nine pounded the Sunnyvale Southern All-Stars 26-1 in four innings, also advancing them to the Northern California state tournament. Celeste Mendoza was the winning pitcher for Gilroy, striking out five and allowing just one hit. Amber Gamboa dominated at the plate with a double, triple and five RBI’s.
The girls were scheduled to play their first-round NorCal state tournament game Friday in Manteca. A win would pit them in a 9am game today, but a loss would mean they play Sunday at 9am.
Boys’ Senior All-Stars
The Gilroy squad, which advanced out of the District 39 tournament held at Gilroy High, had a rough time on a foreign field when they moved on to the double-elimination Section 5 tournament last weekend. Last Saturday, Gilroy dropped a 7-0 decision to North County (Salinas). Things didn’t get any easier for the garlic all-stars Sunday. They were knocked out of the tournament by Lincoln Glen (San Jose) in a 10-0 loss.
11-year-old Girls’ All-Stars
The 11-year-old Gilroy girls kick off their All-Star season today at Lincoln Park in Manteca at 2pm.
