Three division of Gilroy Little League softball advanced to the
state championships taking place this weekend.
Gilroy Little league’s Girls Majors All-Stars are headed to the Division II Northern California State Tournament in Sacramento taking place July 18-23.

After a 12-1 win on Saturday, Gilroy went on to win even more impressively on Sunday, topping the Alum Rock Spartans 14-0 at the softball field at Gilroy High.

Holly Lam took home player of the game honors on Saturday with a home run to right field. Lam and Angelica Carrillo then combined as pitchers for the shutout on Sunday. Mariza Rodriguez had the hit of that game by delivering a two-run home run over the left field fence.

“I’ve never seen a girl this age hit a ball that far,” manager Ray Covarrubias said. Coaches Dave Dennis and Eric Carrillo praised all the girls on their performance as a team.

Members of the team include: Angelica Carillo, Raeanna Covarrubias, Kristen Dennis, Jenae Estrada, Kaslin Ettema, Holly Lam, Adrianna Ortega, Brianna Perez, Mariza Rodriguez, Kristina Salazar, Christyn Simpson, Victoria Vasquez and Michaela Zertuche.

Minors, 11-year-olds move on

Gilroy Little League’s Girls Minors All-Stars also advanced to the Division II Northern California State Championships after the North Berryessa All-Stars never showed up for the game and had to forfeit. Gilroy’s team had been practicing for the last four and a half weeks for the tournament and was understandably a little disappointed that the other team never showed. The team has more games in store, though, starting this Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Northgate Softball Complex.

Along with the Girls Majors and Girls Minors squads from Gilroy, the 11-year-olds All-Stars will also advance to the state championships this weekend. The team will play at Clayton High School in Concord.
