A 46-year-old man has been transported to a regional hospital Wednesday morning after he sustained “serious injuries” in head-on collision on U.S. Highway 152 near Gilroy, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man, from Big Bear Lake, was traveling east near Bloomfield Avenue in a 2007 Toyota Camry when he collided with a westbound 2006 Cadillac DTS, CHP Officer Jaime Rios said.
Rios said the man was bleeding from his head and was unconscious at the scene when emergency personnel arrived.
He was transported to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, according to the CHP. Emergency crews attempted to airlift him from the scene, but they were unable to land a helicopter because of cloudy, damp conditions, Rios said.
Rios said the occupants of the Cadillac were a 67-year-old female, who was driving, and a 92-year-old female passenger, both from Fresno. Rios said he was not sure of their injuries, but they were conscious when emergency personnel arrived.
The collision was called in to dispatchers at 9:24 a.m. The incident closed traffic in both directions on Highway 152, but lanes were expected to be reopened as of 11 a.m., Rios said.
