Manuel Vieira Vais

Manuel V. Vais passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 28th, 2011, at the Community Hospital of The Monterey Peninsula at the age of 75 years.

Manuel was a native of Faial, Azore Islands, who came to California in 1959, settled in San Juan Bautista until he moved to Hollister in 1976.

Manuel was acquainted with many people during the 15 years he was a Bus Driver for the San Juan School District. He enjoyed working in his yard and upon his retirement from bus driving he did yard maintenance for his friends.

Manuel was a member of Sacred Heart Parish; was very active within the Portuguese Community as well as the S.D.E.S. Hall. You would see him in the kitchen preparing for the “Fiesta” and the many other functions that were held annually. Arranging the flags and flag bearers for the Fiesta and the parade was something he enjoyed. Manuel was a “people person” who enjoyed his family, especially the time spent on cruises; he loved the ocean and locally fishing Monterey Bay out of Moss Landing Harbor. A happy time was playing cards with his friends.

Manuel is survived by his spouse of 52 years, Teresa Vais; his daughter Theresa Bonifacino and her husband Jim; his sister Maria Souto and her husband Antonio of the Azores; brothers Fernando Vais, spouse Maria, and Frank Vieira, spouse Theresa of Hollister; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews, and other members of his extended family. Visitation will be Tuesday , May 3rd, 2011, from 12:00 noon until 8:00 P.M. with the Rosary offered at 7:00 P.M. at the Grunnagle Funeral Home Chapel.

Family and friends will leave the mortuary Wednesday, at 9:30 A.M. for a Mass of The Resurrection at Sacred Heart Church 5th & College Sts., Hollister beginning at 10:00 A.M. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
