Martin Michael Mullins

Martin (Marty) M. Mullins, age 92, died at Windsor Chico Care Facility, Chico, Ca, on Friday, October 24, 2008, after battling the effects of Alzheimer’s disease for over eight years.

Marty was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1916 to Hubert and Mary Mullins. His education included schools in New York City, Bacherlor of Arts degree from San Francisco State College, and a Masters of Education degree from San Jose State. Marty served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. Attaining the rank of Major, he was stationed in Northern Africa and Italy for three years. His careers included teaching school administration, and financial advising. He served on the boards of several state and national history teachers’ organizations.

His wife and love of his life, Ellen Mullins, preceded Marty in death. They were married on February 28, 1941. Ellen’s death, just eight months ago, was a severe blow to Marty’s physical and emotional health from which he was unable to recover.

Marty and Ellen resided in many locales during their 66-year marriage. Primarily they lived in Morgan Hill and Hat Creek, CA, as well as Ashland, Oregon.

Four children survive Marty: Jeff Mullins of Taos, New Mexico, Maureen Zeuss of San Rafael, CA, Brian Mullins of Chico, CA, and Kelley Mullins of North Bend, Washington. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren with three more great-grandchildren on the way.

In his youth, Marty was a standout three-sport athlete. His greatest passion was baseball. He was a stalwart New York/San Francisco Giants fan his entire life. He was also an avid angler and loved to play chess. He, together with Ellen, enjoyed reading, traveling, and their volunteer service in Ashland, Oregon. Marty also loved a good political debate and was a lifelong member of the Democratic Party.

A small family service was held at Brusie Funeral Home in Chico on Saturday, October 25, 2008.

His family prays that, in death, Marty has found that perfect place to spend eternity. The place where his mind is still as sharp as a tack, streams are full of trout, and his beautiful wife, Ellen, is once again by his side.

In lieu of flowers, please donate in the name of Martin Mullins to the Alzheimer’s Association (Memory/Research) at 1060 La Avenida, Mountain View, CA 94043.
