Mary Mello Hashim died Sept. 21, 2003, in Gilroy.
She was mother to Rick Mello of Gilroy, grandmother to Lynn Mello Skogen, Tina Mello Mark, and great-grandmother to Kerner Mark.
Mrs. Hashim was born Oct. 2, 1911, in Fall River, Mass. where she spent most of her life. She came to live in Gilroy after the death of her second husband Philip in 1999. Her parents and first husband Manuel Mello and two sisters Stella and Olympia preceded her in death. She is survived by her sister Gilda Souza of Somerset, Mass., 12 nieces and nephews, 22 grand nieces and nephews, a sister-in-law, Mary Hashim Edelman of Sacramento, and a brother-in-law, Ray Hashim of West Palm Beach, Flor.
Mrs. Hashim was noted for her great lavish backyard parties for friends and family. She loved to cook for a great number of people in the area where she lived until coming to California. She attended one of the first Garlic Festivals while on vacation to Gilroy in 1979. She commented that Gilroy should have a Linguisa Festival just to spice things up. Her infectious smile will be dearly missed by friends and family.
Rick Mello asks that she be remembered in your prayers. Mrs. Hashim’s remains will be buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River later this month. A tribute to her life will be held for family and friends in Fall River on Oct. 25.
