Dear Editor,
Regarding Lisa Pampuch’s column “Merit Pay or Alternative Compensation: Words Matter'” I request a few simple answers:
1) Define merit pay.
2) Give me examples in the private sector where merit pay works for the individual, quantitatively, and not the group.
3) Explain why private schools do not offer whatever merit pay is defined to be.

Alumni Embarrassed by Soccer Coach’s Behavior
Dear Editor,
I am an embarrassed alumni from Mt. Pleasant varsity soccer ’84-’87. After reading your article and hearing about the game from my wife, I contacted the school and the district about Coach Nick Arellano’s pathetic display of behavior. I even forwarded your article for them to review.
Apparently times have changed. No one from the school will respond to any of my emails. They obviously condone this type of behavior from their coaching staff. I remember a time when Mt. Pleasant had a good team but more importantly, we had a coach who was a great role model and who lead by his knowledge of the game and his composure during pressured moments.
Gilroy is a blessed program to have coaches like Armando Padilla and Brian Hall. I’m happy for the boys of Gilroy. It’s amazing what great coaches can do for a soccer program. No offense to Craig Martin and the other coach at the time but I assisted them about six years ago with goalkeeping. This program has turned around tremendously under Padilla and Hall.

Farewell to an Accessible and Caring Superintendent
Dear Editor,
I would like to let Gilroy Unified School District outgoing Superintendent Edwin Diaz know that I appreciate his tenure here.
I first met him when I was president of the Parent Advisory for the Gilroy High School CalSOAP program. We were having a fundraiser at Gilroy Bowl and he showed up on a weekend with his wife and personally donated and supported our event.
I thought that would only happen in a small community like Gilroy. When elected officials or people running for office wanted to meet with Edwin he always not only made himself available but also his staff. Where else can you talk to the school superintendent about issue or concerns when you run into him at the local gym?
I only hope that the new superintendent will be as accessible to members of the community. So good luck Edwin! You will be missed and we know that Gilroy will always be your home!
