Turnovers, poor shot selection and missed free throws doomed the Gilroy varsity boys basketball team Thursday, as the Mustangs lost 52-50 at home to the Alvarez Eagles.

Gilroy had a chance to tie the game with 11 seconds left, but an inbounds play to get something going to the bucket for a kick-out pass resulted in a traveling violation with just four seconds left. Alvarez completed a pass downcourt to let the clock expire.

“We just didn’t execute,” GHS assistant coach Jeremy Dirks said of the overall performance. “Turnovers kill us. We’re throwing the ball to ghosts.”

The Mustangs likely would have won if they hit their free throws. As a team, Gilroy made eight of 11 in the first half, but only shot nine of 20 in the second.

“We’re not hitting our free throws and we work on that every day in practice,” Dirks said. “I think our problem is a lot mental.”

Derek Jensen led Gilroy with 20 points. Lorenzo Dobson was second on the team with 11 points, Marshad Johnson had seven, Stephen Galtman had five, Justin Wheat had four and Elijah Harrell had three.

Matt Baker led the Eagles with 17 points and Danny Flores had 11.

Gilroy is now 1-3 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 7-12 overall. Alvarez gained an identical overall record to the Mustangs but has a half-game lead over Gilroy in the TCAL at 2-3.

Junior Varsity Note:

Referees wouldn’t allow a running clock in Thursday’s junior varsity contest between Gilroy and Alvarez, and the end result wasn’t pretty.

The Mustangs clipped the Eagles’ wings, and then plucked the birds’ feathers en route to an 82-18 victory. With the win the team improved to 15-4 overall, 3-1 in the TCAL.

Freshmen Note:

Gilroy defeated Alvarez 53-44 Thursday through 27 points by Cameron Yawary. Conner Ross was also in double-figures scoring.

The Mustangs are now 11-8 overall, 2-2 in league.
