Gilroy – After playing top-notch ball for the past week, the GHS softball team finally ran into one they couldn’t win, losing to Mitty, 7-3 on Monday.

Down by seven runs going into the last frame on the San Jose school’s home field, Gilroy battled back to score three runs but couldn’t make up the deficit.

“We came out strong, we played excellent defense,” said head coach Julie Berggren. “We hit the ball hard, just not to the gaps.”

She praised her team for battling back. “I’m really proud of the girls, how they came back in the top of the seventh.”

On Friday, Gilroy opened their Circle of Champions run with a 7-0 win against Harbor. It was particularly satisfying as the Pirates had beaten the ‘Stangs in the first game of the season.

“It was very helpful for (pitcher) Sarah Villar mentally to be able to shut down a team she had struggled against the first time,” said Berggren.
