Hurler Tanya Isbell delivers a pitch during Tuesday's 6-5

Cousins Magana
&
amp; Miles lead Lady Rams to 6-5 comeback win over Cabrillo
GILROY – If it wasn’t Ashley Magana getting the job done at the plate for the Gavilan College softball squad, then it was teammate Kristine Miles putting her bat on the ball in the clutch.

The two cousins combined for seven hits, three runs-batted-in, and three runs-scored to lead the Lady Rams to a thrilling 6-5 home victory over Cabrillo College on Tuesday.

Miles (3-for-4, 3 RS, 1 RBI) tripled to right field to open the bottom of the seventh inning in the tie ball game, and Magana (4-for-4 with 2 RBIs) singled her home for the game-winning run.

Gavilan has now won two of its last three conference games, and so has freshman hurler Tanya Isbell, who struck out six and allowed only two earned runs on four hits in her complete-game victory.

After Cabrillo broke up the scoreless tie with one run in the top of the fourth, the Lady Rams matched their opponents with one run in the bottom of the inning. Miles singled to center, stole second base and then scored on a double by Magana.

The Lady Rams then exploded for a four-run fifth inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Following freshman Jackie Mendez’s single and a Katrina Villa’s walk, freshman Vicki Velasquez smacked an RBI single. Miles followed with an RBI double and freshman Megan MacDonald kept the rally going with an RBI single. For the fourth run of the inning, Magana connected for a single to score Miles.

But in the top of the seventh inning, Cabrillo struck for four runs of its own to tie the game at 5-5. Three straight Gavilan errors, along with two walks, allowed Cabrillo to climb back in it.

The Lady Rams, however, used their last licks to steal back the victory to avoid going into extra innings.
