GILROY – Monterey proved to be merely a tune-up on Tuesday for Gilroy High’s field hockey team, which will face a tough opponent in Archbishop Mitty Thursday.

The Mustangs blasted the visiting Toreadors 9-0 at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex, improving Gilroy’s record to 9-0-1 on the season.

Emily Costa recorded three goals for the hat trick, Elise Ogle had two scores – one slotted into the top right corner off the bounce – and Dani Hemeon, Laura Spellman, Jennifer Rose, and freshman Christina Chuck all netted shots.

“It was good stuff,” Gilroy coach Adam Gemar said. “It was more of a practice round.

“We just tried a few new things, easy stuff.”

Thursday’s matchup with Mitty will be anything but easy. The Monarchs are considered one of the top three teams in the Central Coast Section, along with St. Francis and Gilroy.

“I think it’s huge,” Gemar said about Thursday’s game, comparing the caliber of competition to be on the level of Saratoga and Los Gatos, two teams the Mustangs have already beaten this season.

“Theoretically, [Mitty is] better,” Gemar said. “If not better, at least at the caliber of Los Gatos.”

Gilroy’s coach added his players will be working on set plays in practice Wednesday to give themselves a better chance of finishing prime scoring opportunities.

JV Note:

Gilroy’s junior varsity field hockey squad also had an impressive performance against Monterey Tuesday, beating the Toreadors 8-0.

Shayna Robledo recorded a hat trick, Mariah Derry tallied two goals and Savannah McGovern, Tiana Huddlestun, and Danielle Dias each netted shots.
