Street value of plants seized tops $480 million
Gilroy – More than 122,000 marijuana plants have been destroyed this year in Santa Clara County, sheriffs announced Wednesday.
The total street value of all plants seized and eradicated in the county this year tops $480 million.
Two busts last week, one near Mt. Umunhum, the other in unincorporated Palo Alto, pushed the total up by 11,974 plants. No arrests were made at either location, but previous raids resulted in three arrests this year.
The county’s Marijuana Suppression Team consists of two full-time deputies and a sergeant, equipped with a helicopter to spot marijuana grows from the air.
Funded by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, the team aims to cut marijuana out of the market by destroying crops, arresting growers and prosecuting traffickers.
