Sacramento – Mt. Pleasant’s Jeneba Tarmoh wrapped up her sterling prep career in grand fashion, earning dual state titles for the second straight year.
The Tennessee-bound sprinter won the 100 and 200 meters and helped the Cardinals claim the team state title for the first time in school history. Tarmoh blazed to victory in the 100 in 11.27 and the 200 in 23.20 in Saturday’s CIF State Championships at Hughes Stadium.
Teammate Vashti Thomas also won an individual title by claiming the 100-meter hurdles in a national federation record time of 13.03. She added a second-place finish in the triple jump and a third-place finish in the long jump.
Mt. Pleasant overcame a disqualification in the 4×100 relay to become the first Santa Clara County school since the Andrew Hill girls in 1978 to win an team title.
Castilleja’s Tori Anthony easily gave the Central Coast Section another state champ. She cleared 14-1 in the pole vault, more than a foot better than Del Norte’s Kelsy Hintz. St Francis’ Natasha Barthel was third.
Milpitas’ Eileen Nguyen was fourth in the 400 meters at 54.53, an event won by Long Beach Poly’s Jasmine Joseph. She also was seventh in the 200 meters, which was won by Tarmoh. Jordan Diaz of Leigh was eighth in the 800 meters with her time of 2:13.03. Leland’s Katie Nelms was ninth in the 300-meter hurdles and Saratoga’s Kiersten Dolbec was ninth in the high jump.
The highlight for the CCS in the boys competition not surprisingly came from Los Gatos’ Nico Weiler. After clearing 17-6 1/4 in the section finals at Gilroy, Weiler cleared 17-2 to cruised to the state title. San Benito’s Josh Schroder advanced to the finals, but no-heighted.
Los Altos’ Eric Hersey was fifth in the 110 hurdles and eighth in the 300 hurdles. Los Gatos’ Colin Quirke was third in the discus, Oak Grove’s Sabastian Sam was fourth in the 800 meters, Alisal’s Diego Estrada was 11th in the 3,200 meters.
